To Kill a Mockingbird Plot Summary

Dill is to Stay with his Aunt Rachel:The plot summary of chapter The adults decide that Dill will stay at his Aunt Rachel after one week. He now becomes Scout and Jems next-door neighbor. The children are happy with the decision. Heck Tate comes to the Finch house one night with a group of men, as they are relaxing together at the living room. He informs Atticus of the possibility of a town mob as Tom Robinson's trial is nearing. Tom stays now at the Maycomb's local jail. He also warns him that Tom Robinson's life may be in danger because of outraged people in town.Aunt Alexandra Blames Atticus for being "Disgraceful":Later, Jem informs Scout that their father and Aunt Alexandra argue about Tom's trial and nearly blames Atticus for bringing disgrace to the Finch family. Atticus left the house unnoticed the following evening. The children look for him at the town center. They see him at the Maycomb jail porch sitting and reading a newspaper. Jem suggests that they leave unnoticed because Atticus looks quite comfortable in his chair. As they turn to start walking towards home, cars start to pull up in front of the jailhouse and a group of men surround the front porch demanding that Atticus move out of the way as he sits in front of the jailhouse door.Atticus Will Not Move from the Door:Atticus stubbornly refuses to move out of their way. Scout feels that things are getting serious and it seems that she runs with the two boys behind her, towards her father to offer defense. She realizes these men are not the same group who went to their house the other night. Scout knows that these men intend to get Tom Robinson. Atticus orders the children home but nobody is moving away from where the children stand. One of the men orders Atticus to instruct the children to leave within 15 minutes while Scout tries to look for a familiar face from the group.The Plot Thickens -- Court Case and Becoming Barbaric:Scout finds Walter's father in the group and requests him to say "hey" to Walter. She also talks to him about the free, helpful services Atticus had given to him in the past. The group becomes silent and they all realize they are becoming barbaric and mean in treating the case of Tom Robinson.Mr Cunningham's Shame:Mr. Cunningham calms down, feels ashamed of his action, calls off the group, and successfully sends the men home. He squats down to tell Scout that he will tell Walter "hey" for her. Mr. Underwood, positioned with a shotgun, talks with Atticus for a while. Mr. Underwood is the owner of the newspaper.
